The price of sunglasses does not always correlate with adequate protection. There are many factors to consider when buying eyewear for UV protection. A cheap pair from your local drugstore might prove costlier eventually. You could develop serious eye health issues if they lack adequate protection.

UV Rays

UV or ultraviolet rays are energy rays mainly produced by the sun. However, they can also be artificially produced during arc welding or in solariums. Other sources include storm lightning, water purifiers, and disinfectants. Still, not all is bad with UV rays.

Benefits of UV Rays

People casually refer to the sun as giving them vitamin D. While this is not entirely true, it is close. UV rays are instrumental in catalyzing the production and processing of this vitamin. Appropriate amounts of ultraviolet rays are beneficial to your health. Appropriate exposure to UV rays can:

  • Help lower blood pressure

  • Increase production of the happy hormone, serotonin

  • Increase melanin levels in your body

  • Help in treating skin conditions like vitiligo and psoriasis

  • Sterilize and purify by eliminating harmful microbes

Importance of Ultraviolet Protection in Sunglasses

Some sunglasses may offer a tint but do not block the ultraviolet rays from harming your eyes. They cause your pupils to dilate because of the perceived darkness. But if the sunglasses do not have any UV protection, this can be disastrous to your eye health. It enables even more UV radiation to enter your eye.

Conditions That May Develop

Consistent exposure to harmful ultraviolet rays can result in serious, cumulative consequences. Some of them include:

  • Macular degeneration

  • Eyelid cancers

  • Ocular melanoma

  • Cataracts

  • Photokeratitis – This is a sunburn of the eye like the one you get from exposing your skin to UV rays

The longer your eyes get exposed to these ultraviolet rays, the greater your risk of developing eye issues. Proper UV protection using quality sunglasses can protect your eyes and the skin around them.

Cancer Prevention

Inadequate protection against ultraviolet rays around your eyes may also result in certain skin cancers. Studies show that five to 10 percent of all skin cancers occur around the eyes. For this reason, sunglasses with UV protection and polarization are instrumental in preventing them. In addition to causing glare, ultraviolet rays can damage the skin area surrounding your eyes. This can lead to serious eye-health issues.

Get Quality Sunglasses

Opt for sunglasses that have tags detailing their UV-blocking properties. According to experts, lenses that provide about 100 percent protection are appropriate. They should also protect against UVA and UVB rays. If you want to be more diligent, buy sunglasses that can block up to 90 percent of visible light.

Additionally, sunglasses with an anti-reflective layer on the inner side of the lens are preferable. This prevents UV rays from reflecting off the back surface of your sunglasses. Sunglasses with wider frames are also preferable as they offer additional protection to your skin. While micro sunnies are stylish, they offer no useful protection to the skin around your eyes.
