If you are tired of relying on glasses or contacts all day to see clearly, Ortho-K is an excellent option. These are special lenses that gently reshape your cornea. They can be prescribed by one of our optometrists at Coastal Family Eye Care. If you are considering Ortho-K, contact one of our offices in Pensacola or Orange Beach. We have put together a few questions that we encounter regarding Ortho-K.
Q: How Do Ortho-K Lenses Work?
A: Ortho-K, also known as orthokeratology, differ from traditional contact lenses because you wear them at night. While you are sleeping, the contacts gently reshape your corneas, allowing you to see clearly when you wake up in the morning. When you use Ortho-K, you will not need to wear glasses or contacts all day.
Q: Who Is a Good Candidate For Ortho-K?
A: To be a good candidate for Ortho-K, your prescription must fit within the acceptable parameters. Your prescription must be in the range of +2.00 to -6.00 if you are nearsighted or farsighted. If you have astigmatism, your prescription can be no higher than -1.75.
Q: How Long Does It Take For Ortho-K To Be Effective?
A: It can take two or three nights for the contacts to be effective. The higher your prescription, the longer it will take for the contacts to be effective. You will still need to wear your glasses while you are waiting for the contacts to work.
Q: How Long Will Ortho-K Continue To Be Effective?
A: It is best if you wear your contacts every night when you go to bed. If you forget to put them in for one night, your vision should not be affected. If you go two or three nights without wearing the contacts, your corneas will return to their original shape and you will need to wear your glasses to see clearly. If you do not want to rely on your contacts, make it a point to wear your contacts every night.
Q: How Often Will I Need a Replacement Pair?
A: It is recommended that you replace your Ortho-K lenses every year or two, depending on the condition of your current lenses.
Q: What Is the Average Cost Of Ortho-K?
A: Ortho-K is pretty expensive. The average cost of these lenses is between $800 and $1,200. Also, these lenses are not covered by insurance; therefore, you will need to pay for them yourself.
